Hidden macOS features

In this post we're going to explore some hidden features of macOS that can enhance your productivity and improve your workflow.

Move a file.

To move a file in finder you can use ⌘C (Command + C) to copy the file,
then navigate to the destination folder and use command ⌘⌥V (Command + Option + V) to move the file instead of copying it.

Hidden menu options.

A lot of menu options are hidden, you can reveal them by holding down the Option key while clicking on the menu. This will often show additional options that are not visible by default.

Resizing windows.

You can quickly resize windows by holding down the Option key while dragging the edges or corners. This will allow you to resize the window from the center, rather than from the edge.

Apple Logo

You can type Option + Shift + K to quickly insert the Apple logo () in your documents.

Screenshot a window

Press Command + Shift + 4 to enter screenshot mode, then press the Space bar to switch to window mode. Click on the window you want to capture.

Holding control while taking a screenshot immediately saves it to the clipboard.

Screen Recording

Press Command + Shift + 5 to enter screen recording mode. You can choose to record the entire screen or a selected portion.

Open Settings

Press Command + , (Command + Comma) to quickly open the settings of the currently open application.

Move cursor quickly in the terminal.

Option click in terminal jumps your cursor to that position in the terminal.

Quick Look

Press the Space bar while a file is selected in Finder to quickly preview the file without opening it.

No state restoration

Shift + Click on an app in the Dock will reset its state before opening it.

Cycle between windows of the current application.

Press Command + ` (Command + Backtick) to quickly cycle between windows of the current application.
(On some keyboards, try the ~ (tilde) key instead)

Hide current application

Press Command + H (Command + H) to quickly hide the currently active application.

(Un)hide the dock

Press Command + Option + D (Command + Option + D) to quickly hide or show the dock.
